What is Sandalwood?

It is an evergreen fragrant and a tropical tree. Scientific Name is Santalum album. It grows up to 8 to 12 m in height and 2.5 m in girth. The barks are smooth and the color is gray-brown.
It is an evergreen native tree to India and Indonesia. At present Australia also cultivate this tree.

Medicinal Uses

Because of its antiseptic and astringent properties, the tree has been used in medical treatment widely. The oil is very famous in the Ayurvedic medicinal system. The sandalwood also helps in urinary and genital disorders.


The crop needs a hot atmosphere for plantation and it grows better in humid climatic conditions. In India and Australia, they cultivate it commercially in forests.
Sandalwood tree farming also requires a temperature between 12° and 35°C. It is the perfect temperature for good growth of Chandan tree. altitudes are required 600 and 1050 meters.

Side Effects

Sandalwood oil may cause skin inflammation, although it is generally considered to be nonirritating to human skin. The pregnant woman should not take oral medicine.
